What must schools track for the two Class 10 board exams?
Track each student's Phase 1 (February, compulsory) and Phase 2 (May, optional) results, the improvement subjects chosen, the best-of outcome, Essential Repeat status and the LOC data for registration.

Quick answer: from 2026 CBSE Class 10 has two board exam phases. Phase 1 is held in February and is compulsory. Phase 2 is held in May and is optional: a student can appear to improve up to 3 subjects. The internal assessment is done once. From the 2028 exams CBSE plans standard and advanced levels in Mathematics, Science and Social Science (reported by a single secondary source, so verify). A school therefore needs to track Phase 1 and Phase 2 marks per subject, who opted to improve which subjects, the best-of result that appears on the final marksheet, Essential Repeat status, the LOC data at registration, and what parents have been told. Confirm all dates and rules with the official CBSE circulars. Plan your office calendar around them early, because the busiest weeks for registration, corrections and result queries land at the same time as unit tests and annual-day preparation.
What are the two Class 10 board exam phases?
| Item | Phase 1 | Phase 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Month | February | May |
| Status | Compulsory for every student | Optional |
| Scope | Full subject set | Improvement in up to 3 subjects |
| Internal assessment | Held once | Not repeated; the same internal marks apply |
| Outcome | Result for all subjects | Better of the two attempts per improved subject is considered (best-of) |
What should a school record for each student?
- Registration and LOC data: names, dates of birth, subject scheme, fee amounts and parent names must match the records you submit. A mismatch is a common cause of corrections.
- Phase 1 marks and result per subject, entered from the board result or the school's own mock data clearly labelled as such.
- Phase 2 opt-in: whether the student intends to appear, in which subjects (maximum 3), and the date the family confirmed.
- Best-of outcome: the final per-subject marks that apply after both phases.
- Essential Repeat status: students who need to repeat subjects, with the subject list and the next attempt.
- Internal assessment marks: entered once, locked after submission, with an audit trail.
- Parent communication log: what was told, when and by which channel, so there is no dispute later.
How does best-of work in practice?
For each subject the student improves, the better of the two attempts counts. For a school, the important point is to keep both attempts as separate records and compute the final result by rule, never by overwriting the first marks. If a rule changes, you can recompute. This also helps when a parent asks why a marksheet differs from an earlier result slip. Because the rule pack can change, keep the best-of calculation and the improvement-subject limit as configuration rather than fixed numbers in code.
What dates matter for CBSE registration and LOC?
The List of Candidates (LOC) for 2026-27, as reported in our notes, ran from 24 Sep to 21 Oct 2026, with a late-fee window to 30 Oct and corrections from 2 to 4 Nov. Fees reported are ₹1,600 for 5 subjects plus ₹320 for each extra subject. These dates are from a single secondary source; use the official circular. Next year's dates will differ, so build a calendar and alert your office early.
| Item | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| LOC submission window | 24 Sep to 21 Oct 2026 |
| Late-fee window | Until 30 Oct 2026 |
| Corrections | 2 to 4 Nov 2026 |
| Fee | ₹1,600 for 5 subjects, plus ₹320 for each extra subject |
How should schools prepare students and parents?
- Explain the two phases and that Phase 2 is optional, so no student feels forced.
- Collect the improvement-subject choice in writing, with the parent's signature or an electronic consent.
- Share a calendar of Phase 1, results, Phase 2 forms and Phase 2 dates.
- Offer counselling to students who are anxious about marks, and refer them to a counsellor where needed.
- Tell parents what the school will and will not do: remedial classes, mock tests and timelines.
How do you run the two-phase cycle step by step?
Managing the two Class 10 board exam phases in a school
Step 1: verify records before LOC
Check names, dates of birth, subject codes and parent names against admission and previous records, and fix mismatches first.
Step 2: submit LOC and fees on time
Use a checker for subject schemes and fees, submit before the window closes and keep the acknowledgement.
Step 3: run Phase 1 mocks and internal assessment
Enter internal assessment once, lock it and keep mock marks labelled separately from board results.
Step 4: record Phase 1 results
Enter results per subject and flag students who are candidates for improvement or Essential Repeat.
Step 5: collect Phase 2 choices
Record the improvement subjects (up to 3) per student and confirm with parents in writing.
Step 6: record Phase 2 and compute best-of
Enter Phase 2 marks, calculate the final per-subject result by the configured rule and keep both attempts.
Step 7: issue communication
Send the final status to parents, link the board result via DigiLocker where applicable and store the board roll number.
What about the standard and advanced levels from 2028?
Our notes mention standard and advanced levels in Mathematics, Science and Social Science from the 2028 exams, from a single secondary source. For Class 8 and 9 students who will be in the 2028 cohort, it is sensible to begin recording which level each student is likely to take, but do not promise anything to parents until the circular is confirmed. A flexible subject-level field and configurable rules are enough for now.
How can software help?
The exam module of Acavya tracks Phase 1 and Phase 2, best-of, improvement-subject selection and Essential Repeat status, with a LOC validator, an exportable sheet and a deadlines calendar, so the exam cell sees every student’s status in one place before each board deadline. Board results link out to DigiLocker; the system stores the board roll number. See the HPC guide for report cards. Acavya is not CBSE-only: the same exam module serves schools on ICSE, state boards, IB, Cambridge or their own curriculum.
Is Phase 2 compulsory for Class 10?
No. Phase 1 in February is compulsory; Phase 2 in May is optional and lets a student improve up to 3 subjects.
Is internal assessment held twice?
Our notes say the internal assessment is held once. Confirm the current rule in the CBSE circular for your year.
Which result counts if a student takes both phases?
For the subjects improved in Phase 2, the better result is considered (best-of). Confirm how it is shown on the final marksheet in the official circular.
Do these changes apply to state-board schools?
The two-phase format is a CBSE change. State boards decide their own schedules, so follow your board's notices.
